Sunday Recap

Flyers shutout Capitals 1-0

Ilya Bryzgalov looked like the 51 million dollar goalie the Flyers signed in the off-season, stopping 34 shots on his way to his third shutout of the season. The Flyers defeated the Washington Capitals 1-0 Sunday night, with rookie Eric Wellwood scoring his second career NHL goal.

Excellent defensive play and great goaltending was all the Flyers needed to defeat a Washington team they have struggled against in the past. Newly acquired defensemen Nick Grossman had six hit and six blocked shots. Flyers fans were on edge about the goaltending situation and many believed that they should have made a move at the trade deadline. Bryzgalov quieted fans for now.

The Flyers will come home to face a tough opponent in the Detroit Redwings Tuesday night at 7:00.

Sixers fall to Chicago 96-91

The Sixers fell short against the Chicago Bulls Sunday night 96-91. Derrick Rose squashed any chance of a Sixers rally with a season high 35 points and eight assists.

Elton Brand led the Sixers with 14 points and 13 rebounds. The Sixers had a chance to tie the game with less than five seconds left in the game but came up short off the hands of an Andre Iguodala three-pointer. Jrue Holiday added 16 points in 39 minutes.

Shortly after the game, “trade iggy” was trending on Twitter in the Philadelphia area. The all-star forward air-balled a three with just over a minute left in the game and then missed another three with 3.8 seconds left in the game. With the Sixers not looking so sharp as of late, many believe the team needs to make a move before the deadline in order for them to remain competitive.

The Sixers will face the 14-23 Milwaukee Bucks Monday night at 7:00.

Errors highlight Phillies loss to Yankees

The Phillies lost Sunday’s spring matchup against the New York Yankees 7-4. The loss was highlighted by poor defense, including a dropped fly ball by Domonic Brown and two errors by Michael Martinez. Brown’s error could be something the Phillies should be concerned with, as he is making the transition from right-field to left-field.

Hunter Pence hit a homerun and looks to be in great shape for the start of the season in April. Brown added two hits for the Phillies, including a triple. Roy Halladay got the start for the Phillies and looked solid. Alex Rodriquez added a homerun for the Yankees.

The Phillies will play the Yankees again on Monday afternoon at 1:05. Joe Blanton will get the start.
